about

New Mexican artist Paula Castillo strives to expose the strangeness of the world and the ideological forces that influence our conceptions of nature and relationships. Her work uses the literal and symbolic aspects of home places to experiment with ideas related to the broader North American Southwest region to create allegorical narratives that imagine the immense complexity involved for any entity. The all-encompassing goal of her work is to expose our real, dense, and buried attachments to all others.

"Jetty Jack" reflects on how unjust environmental "Jetty Jack" reflects on how unjust environmental conditions are produced and sustained through engineering practices and how they might be made otherwise. This sculpture, made from steel angle iron and plexiglass with a printed transparent film of a select Reverse the Curse community event image taken by photographer Don Usner, is an approximation of a Kellner jetty, a civil engineering construction produced and erected throughout the Middle Rio Grande corridor in the mid-20th century. The purpose of its use was to control erosion initiated by the rapid settlement of the Rio Grande Valley and the 17 years of clear-cutting of Douglas fir in the 19th century in the forests surrounding Jicarita Peak for railroad ties for new AT & SF lines through Belén, NM out to Los Angeles, CA.

Considering how successful the jetty system was in straightening out a meander, it was no surprise when someone got the idea to use jetties to straighten out the entire middle Rio Grande Valley. This engineering feat produced unintended consequences that we see today like interrupting the river's natural processes, disturbing habitats of species now extirpated or endangered, and promoting exotic species at the expense of native vegetation. When it was done, the Rio Grande was no longer a natural stream but a highly modified water storage and conveyance system with extensive flood control structures, including the ubiquitous jetty jack.
